Mr Christian was born near Maryport and his father's family lived at Ewanrigg Hall on the outskirts of the town. The Hall was the setting of Wilkie Collins' novel The Women in White.Fleming Square. Formerly Maryport's market place and old goose fair and cobbled with what Charles Dickens likened to fossilised kidneys. A mixture of Georgian and Victorian houses overlooks the Square.Mote Hill. This was a Roman and Norman stronghold.
